The Mavericks and Bucks are mulling whether to make a serious run at the Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins, Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reports.
Wiggins’ name has been prominently mentioned in trade rumors, due to his subpar production, the Warriors’ disappointing record and a contract that runs through the 2026/27 season.
Dallas is willing to part with either Grant Williams or Tim Hardaway Jr. for salary-matching purposes to acquire a frontcourt player who can shoot and also make a difference defensively. The Mavs are also willing to include their 2027 first-round pick for the right player, Fischer adds.
As for the Bucks, they’d have to include Bobby Portis to cobble salaries to match Wiggins’ $24.3MM. It’s a tough call for the Bucks, considering Portis’ steady contributions in recent years. Fischer notes that Portis was one of Golden State coach Steve Kerr’s favorites during the FIBA World Cup run with Team USA.
Here are several more interesting tidbits from Fischer:
- Chris Paul, whose $30MM contract for next season is non-guaranteed, is unlikely to be dealt by the Warriors. Jonathan Kuminga is off limits. However, Kevon Looney and his $7.5MM contract could be swapped out, depending what need Golden State ultimately wants to target. Looney’s contract for next season is only guaranteed for $3MM.
- The Wizards are unwilling to deal Kyle Kuzma unless they get multiple first-rounders for him. The Mavericks and Kings have known interest but would likely need to find a third team to facilitate such a deal. Washington has made it known it’s looking for draft capital in any trade.
- Along with previously reported interest in the Hornets’ P.J. Washington, the Mavericks have their eyes on Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart. The latter signed a four-year, $64MM extension last offseason. Dallas also showed interest in Magic big man Wendell Carter but Orlando doesn’t seem inclined to move its starting center.
- The Bucks are willing to include MarJon Beauchamp and the 2024 second-round pick that the Trail Blazers owe them in trade discussions. The Bucks and Sixers have also contacted teams that hold plenty of draft capital, such as the Thunder and Pelicans, regarding potential future first-round pick swaps or packages of second-round picks in exchange for extra first-round selections.
- Speaking of the Sixers, they’re interested in Pacers sharpshooter Buddy Hield. Hield would upgrade their offense and his $18.5MM expiring contract wouldn’t impact their desire to have more cap space than any other team this summer. Picking up more first-round capital, as mentioned above, would facilitate their ability to acquire a wing like Hield or the Pistons’ Bojan Bogdanovic.
- The Celtics are willing to use their $6.2MM trade exception for bench help. Otto Porter Jr. and Lonnie Walker are among the names Fischer has heard as potential Boston acquisitions.
Bring Wiseman back for GPII, Wiggins is currently their best two way player while Kuminga is a rising star and moody needs more playing time!
Huh? GPII is better defensively. That is why they traded Wiseman. Wiggins has been inconsistent all season.
I would rather play GP2 at the 5 than have Wiseman back. And I’ll take the current injury in that. Nothing wrong with Wiseman the person but until he learns to play like he ain’t given up his lunch money no more than he might as well hold a clip board. GP2 makes ppl feel his presence. On D. I’ll take Portis in a deal to move on from Wiggins. KUMINGA NEEDS MINS! Let Draymond play 5 and Portis play 4. If I’m not mistaken Portis likes the 4 when Brooks plays the 5. Keep Paul. I know it would be hard to get him a ring but he could still help Moody and others in a nearly lost season
Wiseman will be restricted FA at year end. Most likely, Warriors could bring him back for minimum. As for the rest of the yr, Wiseman actually makes more salary than GP2.
Chris Paul and Santos for Bogdanovic, Hayes and Wiseman
How do some of these rumors even get out?! U think it’s smart for a team like the Bucks to say half of their young players are being discussed in trade talks? How would that inspire confidence or stability and effort in any positive way? These cannot be be serious conversation leaks and simply speculation. Or the worst run front office ever, for which there seems to be escalating evidence.
They have no picks so young unproven talents have to be included in any trade
And with Lillard potentially starting to show his age this season, time is of the essence. For better or worse, they’ve moved all their chips to the middle of the table and will see things through.
It’s weird that the Bucks want to get rid of all their younger, less expensive talent (and picks), while the Brewers are doing the opposite.
So 24 Dubs picks is top 4 protected (25 is top 1 protected) so realistically they could trade ’26, ’27, ’28, or ’29 (obviously not back to back years).
Steph is 35 so those picks could be valuable since they’re further down the line BUT the FO just only want to keep CP3 and do nothing else than shredding Wiggs contract and wait this off season … To overpay Klay and give JK some money
Hopefully we will have some movement. I see the Celtics doing whatever they can to get better.
I like Lonnie Walker jr has a PO fire cracker
Kuzma to kings then barnes to another team for a first pick going to wizards?
Looney can not be traded. He is the heart of our team. He is our Haslem!!!! He will retire as a Warrior after another 10 yrs!!
Don’t understand what the Sixers are planning on doing with all this salary cap space. Once they resign Maxey they won’t have bugger all left and then they need to spend up to fill out about 8 open roster spots. That would also mean we get nothing for Tobias Harris, Batum, Beverly, Oubre and so on. And if we plan on resigning some of these guys then it’s going to be vets min deals to fill out the roster.
I’d rather see them have a couple guys tied to longer term deals on team friendly deals. Grant Williams for instance, good 3 and D role player that can slot in at either forward position and knows how to play his part on a competing side.
As a lifelong fan, I wish the Pacers would find a way to land Portis. He’s the tough guy bulk needed in the defensive paint…
By the time the Kings ever get around to trading for Kuzma, he will be 40yrs old.
Portis and Dray would have the potential for a classic heavyweight bout at practice…
