Signs are pointing toward Paul Reed being traded or waived rather than returning to the Sixers, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who notes that waiving Reed or using his pseudo-expiring $7.7MM contract as a trade chip would allow the team to maximize its cap room. Pompey adds that Philadelphia has had discussions with free agent forward Haywood Highsmith, while Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald tweets that the 76ers have also “poked around” on Caleb Martin.
Although the Heat remain in the mix for both of their free agents and could technically make Martin and Highsmith big offers, they’ve told people they don’t intend to surpass the second tax apron due to the roster-building restrictions that second-apron teams face, says Jackson (Twitter link). That limits Miami’s ability to make a competitive offer to either player.
Despite the Heat’s financial restrictions, Jovan Buha of The Athletic has heard from league sources that Miami is viewed as the “slight” favorite to land DeMar DeRozan. The team doesn’t have the spending flexibility to make it work without additional moves, but DeRozan likes the idea of playing for the Heat and the two sides have remained in touch, tweets Jackson.
Here are a few more rumors and notes related to the trade and free agent markets:
- The Warriors and Spurs are considered the most serious suitors for Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report (video link), who says Golden State has been the most aggressive team in its pursuit of Markkanen.
- Appearing on SportsCenter on ESPN (Twitter video link), Adrian Wojnarowski said the Lakers aren’t interested in using their tradable draft picks just to move off contracts, but would be open to including draft assets for a quality player. However, they’re not pursuing a deal for a high-salary impact player, since they’re skeptical the three-star model is feasible under the new CBA, Wojnarowski explains.
- While a report on Monday suggested the Nets are open to reuniting with Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell, sources tell Brian Lewis of The New York Post that’s not expected to happen.
- In an appearance on Sactown Sports 1140 (YouTube link), Sam Amick of The Athletic said that he’s skeptical the Kings will land Markkanen or Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram, noting that Sacramento still appears to be taking a hard line in its desire to keep Keegan Murray off the table in trade talks. “I don’t know how long the list of guys is that they would give Keegan up for, but it’s not anybody currently available on the market,” Amick said.
Favorites for Derozan to do what?
sign him.
For what purpose?
Playing basketball, presumably.
…so they’re going for a Detroit Pistons style…cool
It’s not going to be that drastic. Herro and Jovic can both shoot well, and Jimmy isn’t as bad for spacing as his 3pt percentage would indicate because he’s one of the best cutters in the game. He basically forces guys to close out on him because he can do the dribble pull-up or cut instantly off the catch, so refusing to close on him will still leave opposing defenses with a problem. Plus guys like Robinson, Rozier, Richardson, and Dru Smith off the bench.
When does the ball move in that lineup
Jimmy, Herro, and DeRozan all average about 5 AST per game, so I’d expect one of them to be the primary ball-handler or to run plays by committee. It’s not like Rozier or Lowry were moving to the tune of 7+ assists, both averaged under 5 with the Heat last year.
All of those guys are ball stoppers/guys that need the ball in their hands
Herro is way better without the ball than with it. 43% catch and shoot from 3, 62% effective FG% on plays run for him. DeRozan and Jimmy can both play without the ball as well. They’ve done it before, they can do it again.
Jimmy shot 41% on catch and shoot 3s last year, in a small sample. Him working as more of a cutter/finisher who can also retreat to the outside and space as part of a play would work well next to DeRozan’s pull-up game and Herro’s off-ball actions. DeRozan is a very solid playmaker. Spoelstra could very well get him to move the ball more now that he has actual scoring help around him for the first time in a while. Averaged 7 assists per game his last year in San Antonio, so he’s quite capable of it.
It is a weird fit, in general. But it could, at least in theory, work.
Herro and derozan don’t make quick decisions as playmakers like that…
DeRozan absolutely does. He’s not pure PG material, but as a primary ball-handler, he makes quick, good decisions. The Heat play a more rhythm-based half-court offense anyway, but you know that.
He improved in that area since he left Toronto, but still always falls back into it when it matters
Jaquez, I’d also expect to improve from 3. He was inconsistent in college, but his FT% was right around 75% the whole time, and he did do okay off the catch,
If Jaime improves from 3, he’s going to be amazing. Dude is a Jimmy Butler clone, minus the elite defense, though he has intangibles and mannerisms that are also similar, on both ends of the court
It wouldn’t surprise me if Spo experimented with Jaquez at the 2 as a starter and Herro coming off the bench like he did in ’21-’22. It would be a big boost to their defense, since Herro is not a great defender (though this past year he improved tremendously acting as a Point of Attack defender, he was a net positive from every range in that role). We’ll see.
Jaime played PG a decent amount…there are lineups where that makes sense, but Herro won’t come off the bench. They would need to replace Highsmith to do that again though (which I had originally thought was a given with Cain at minimum, plus someone else, and right now it’s nobody)
What do you think they do?
Draymond Green’s son: ‘Why can’t we get Luka Doncic?’
Draymond Green to his son: “Klay [Thompson] not going to be on our team no more… He going to Dallas with Luka [Doncic].” Dray’s son: “Why can’t we get Luka?”
In all seriousness, DeRozan is a poor fit for the Heat, but he’s fills two needs for them. 1 is health. DeRozan plays almost every game, and the Heat need availability *so* badly. Second, Jimmy isn’t signed beyond this coming year. If they sign DeRozan for a multi-year deal, they can hedge their bets against him leaving. If he doesn’t, they do have a roster crunch, but they can work with that.
Heat can use scoring, …STARTERS: Hero, Derozan, Jimmy, Nico, Bam…. BENCH: WITH, Rozier, JAQUEZ JR, Duncan, Love, mix the new kids drafted, Dru Smith…Heat OK
Don’t tease us Warriors fans about Markkanen, Luke – the majority of us have already accepted it would take too much to get him. And why would Dunleavy be making all these other moves for front court help if the prospects of Markkanen DRAAAAINING (like how broadcaster Stu Lance says it) wide open 3s for the Dubs in ‘24 and beyond remains alive?
To be fair, lacking fontcourt depth behind Draymond/Looney has been a problem for the Warriors. Sure, TJD has been solid, but you’d probably like to hedge your bets a bit more.
I think it’s more that warriors do not have the assets to get him. Kuminga and all the young players would be the starting point. Utah has so many draft picks already they don’t need anymore. OKC has a lot more to offer for him.
What would it take, Luke and EonADS – Wiggins and three future firsts? The Warriors have enough young talent IMO to absorb the blow of missing out on the first round for a few more years. I’m expecting Santos to take a nice leap forward in his first full year (will refrain from “big leap”).
The Jazz would probably also want one of Kuminga, Moody, TJD, or Podz, minimum. Wiggins is a negative asset and Markkanen is borderline All-NBA caliber. He’s also a much bigger salary hit than Markkanen this season.
The kid they drafted is supposed to be a good paint defender that uses verticality, and can shoot, but not really off movement yet
Wiggins, Podz, and two firsts should be the max Warriors go. I can’t say for sure cuz I haven’t watched a ton of Jazz games, but Markkanen probably isn’t considered an elite #1 – along the lines of a Giannis, a Jokic, a healthy Embiid or Butler, a Doncic, a Brunson, an Ant, a Steph, or an AD (and his two-way game).
No, but I’d definitely say he’s a quality #2. A similar return to what the Raptors got for Siakam (3 firsts, Bruce Brown, filler) would make sense. Wiggins is the filler in that scenario, so you’d need to include at least one actually good player.
Jazz want Kuminga, picks and filler
Jazz want Vassell and 2 Hawks picks from Spurs
I hope the Warriors don’t do that. Markkanen is a the better, more consistent player right now, but Kuminga’s ceiling is higher IMO – he’s technically still rookie aged! So if Kuminga AND a first-rounder or two were thrown in the fray as a starting talking point, that’s gotta be it for Warriors’ young rotation pieces. Still, if I had to pick right now which player would be the better fit alongside the October 2024 versions of Steph and Dray – Markkannen or Kuminga – it’s almost a no-brainer…….Lauri…….you WIIIIIIN, man!!
@The Chosen Dud I would say Wiggins+Podz+1 1st is a great package the Jazz should jump all over. I would also swap out Podz for GP2 and more money/picks. It IS only 1 season on Lauri. If he gets hurt you get burned.
No way Danny Ainge is trading Markkenen for less than 4 FRPs and a player.
Bridges just got 5 FRPs. He got 4 FRPs for Golbert. No way.
This is Danny Ainge, not some fool who is the GM for the Lakers. Trader Danny does not concede.
Stop deluding yourselves. Ainge will want EVERYTHING… EVERYTHING? Everything!!!!
@CF Danny Ainge stinks at this and the Jazz are hopeless who will never contend or win a chip, might as well hand Lauri over so he can ball out on a contender.
@formerlyz don’t forget Reece Beekman being a superb defender at PG who was signed to a 2-way deal, Kerr LOVES to use 2-way players for some reason, but they’re usually trash defensively. Beekman is not.
Ok, everyone in this group chain…..I thought long and hard about it. I mean…..it was the ONLY THING I focused on for a good 35 minutes…..maybe more. I am on board with this…..
KUMINGA, PODZ, MOODY…..AND a 2027 or 2028 first rounder…..for LAURI MARKKANEN-hits-his-mark AGAIN!!
Go for it, Dunleavyyyyyy!!!!! Oohh-ho maaaaaaaaaannnnn it would be an exciting Warriors 2024-25!!!!
I would put Wiggins, GP2 and as many draft picks/$ as possible on the table to get that 1 year of Lauri. Maybe the Jazz will take the bait? Their front office isn’t known for being competent, and its only 1 year. Wiggins can rebound his value to be a trade asset again on a team with zero spotlight, and when GP2 is healthy he’s a nice tradeable or useable piece too.
Danny Ainge is not competent?
You can ask the Sixers and Nets if he is competent…
Jazz, Sixers and Nets have no titles…GSW does
WTF are you talking about? Danny Ainge is a more than competent GM. His trades of Mitchell and Gobert resulted in them now having an additional 7 unprotected future first round picks along with Markannen, Kessler, and Sexton. Dating back to his Boston days Ainge has rarely made a trade unless he is the clear winner. He is going to want Kuminga and since he is already sitting on all those extra picks he is unlikely to settle for difificult to move salary dumps (Wiggins, Payton) and more picks .
Rings > draft picks. Jazz have no rings and will never win one even with Ainge, who is useless outside of Boston.
If you want to make it about who has rings, Ainge has more rings as a GM and player than your guy Dunleavy who has a total of zero.
Don’t engage Davey J. You won’t get anything back but the ramblings of an unhinged clown.
The Jazz would rather keep Markkanen than accept any Wiggins trade. Same goes for any weak offer. They’re not in the charity business, Laker fans. Lol
The point of the trade is to give the Jazz the chances to replace Markkanen’s production, at some point, while compensating for the production lost during that waiting time.
A lot of teams have cap space next season when he is unrestricted. He may not want to stick around on a bad team thats rebuilding, and he is extension eligible so if they want him they can sign him otherwise they have to trade him by the deadline or he just walks for nothing.
The upside for the Jazz is they keep trying to be bad and then being mostly bad and picking 10th. The most valuable asset in the trade could be the Utah 2025 pick if they can land Cooper Flagg and dealing Markkanen for some pieces you waive would be a big step towards tanking for real in a loaded draft year.
Great post Chapmans !!
And here we go A G A I N, the Kings sitting on their hands and doing NOTHING, while any decent FA that could help them are being snatched up right and left. Now I’m going to here how we are at the Salary Cap and can’t do anything. Show one single Contending Team that is NOT over the Salary Cap. Fans are getting fed up we all the excuses and inaction why nothing ever gets done, but every other team doesn’t seem to have a problem.
