JULY 12: Lowry has officially signed his new contract, according to a team press release.
“Kyle is a floor general, the ultimate competitor, and a proven winner who has experienced success at the highest level. His return is vital to our quest toward bringing a championship back to the City of Philadelphia,” Morey said in a statement.
JULY 11: Free agent point guard Kyle Lowry is signing a new one-year contract to return to his hometown Sixers, sources inform Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Charania didn’t report the terms of the deal, but Philadelphia can only offer the veteran’s minimum to free agents after using all of its cap space and its room exception.
Lowry shared the news himself in a fresh Instagram video.
The 38-year-old will be playing in his 19th NBA season in 2024/25. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets that conversations between Philadelphia team president Daryl Morey and Lowry’s agent Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports increased over the last week.
According to Woj, the Villanova alum had been weighing his options and considering several playoff hopefuls as he looks to win his second championship.
After starting out the 2023/24 season with the Heat, Lowry and his expiring $29.7MM contract were traded to the Hornets in exchange for the younger Terry Rozier, currently a more prolific offensive threat. Lowry negotiated a buyout and signed on with his hometown Sixers, where he quickly earned a backcourt starting role alongside All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey with De’Anthony Melton injured.
Though he’s no longer a high-volume scorer, Lowry remains an efficient three-point threat and a surprisingly savvy defender whose solid frame allows him to match up with bigger players despite his 6’0″ height. Across his 23 regular season contests with the Sixers last year (20 starts), the six-time All-Star posted averages of 8.0 points, 4.6 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per night, with a shooting line of .444/.404/.848.
The Sixers have enjoyed perhaps the most productive offseason of any team this summer. Morey cleared out more than $53MM in cap space and pounced when star Clippers forward Paul George became available, quickly signing him to a four-year, maximum deal worth nearly $212MM.
Philadelphia also signed three-and-D small forward Caleb Martin, brought back rebounder extraordinaire Andre Drummond after his two-year Bulls stint, used their full room exception to re-sign swingman Kelly Oubre, signed sharpshooter Eric Gordon to a minimum contract, and signed restricted free agent Tyrese Maxey to a maximum deal via his Bird rights. The Sixers could still conceivably bring back free agent swingman KJ Martin, too, if the price is right.
All told, with this depth surrounding a new core of George, Maxey and perennial MVP candidate Joel Embiid, Philadelphia now looks like one of the best-equipped clubs in the East to challenge the Celtics for conference supremacy next season.
What a bad trade by the Heat…go get it Kyle
Yup, Lowry despite having a poor Heat regular season, his value was always going to be during the playoffs …. still it was a deal the Heat had to make.
Rozier also fits the timeline and can be a trade chip later on.
Lowry’s the kind of guy you hate and root for, good for him to finish his career back home.
So many things they could have done if they didn’t make that trade
Bad trade? Too early to judge bozo
You can root for Philly while I root for Terry to show what he truly has this season.
Big Terry Rozier fan; never suggested I’m not. Bad trade
I hope he can mentor McClain. Nurse used him way too much last year. He should have a reduced role.
Meh!!!
Oh well, DSJ, but I guess Morey had his reasons
I just thought Lowry fouled a lot and was not very productive
He’s a 40% 3pt shooter and can actually run plays while not being a cone on defense. DSJ is a good defender but can’t do anything else. He’s not even a PG, really. Just a guard who can pass. You have to be able to actually run an offense to qualify as a legit PG.
How many roster spots do they have left right now?
Right now, not including Covington, Dowtin, Payne or Smith, they have 4 standard spots and 2 two-ways
good signing if Vet Min
76ers still have 4 million cap room. I’d guess he gets Vet Min.
Batum signed 2-year 9.6 million with Clippers
Edit: 76ers have 4 million luxury tax room before signing Lowry
I view in this way
76ers trade Harden/Harris for George/Martin.
As a result, they are likely to pass the first round playoffs.
Noiceee gotta grab Marcus and Markieff next.
Aren’t the brothers locked into dallas?
I was, and am, so looking forward to what all you guys say about what the Sixers have done.
Are they equipped to challenge the Celtics in the East? They have a team with Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, which is pretty darn good, but Paul and Joel are going to have to stay on the court in 24/25 as well as a run in the playoffs. The rest of these guys are role players, and how good are they at this point in their careers? How good a coach is Nick Nurse?
In my opinion, BB Reference is overrating this emerging team slightly.
This is the model that teams have tried to pull off in the 2020’s. We’ll see how good Philly can be, this upcoming season. I would like to see them go far.
I enjoyed their 1982-83 championship season. That was quite a team. Maurice Cheeks, Dr. J, Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, Bobby Jones..
76ers need decent offensive fire power coming off the bench so George and Embiid can do injury management in the regular season.
Example:
Divincenzo
Gayson Allen
Simons – Blazers
Bane – Grizzlies
The key to success: decent offensive fire power coming off the bench
Berat the Knicks and Bucks first.
Gayson Allen lmaoooooo I know it prpbably wasnt on purpose but so funny
Similar player like that
Don’t forget the starter at Power Forward on that team when Bobby Jones came off the bench. Mark Ivaroni. Great trivia answer as part of the starting five.
I agree about that historic Sixers team, they were fun to watch despite the lack of three pt shooting.
It’s all about health for this team, the roster looks to be at least top 5 on paper.
Please retire Kyle, love ya but it is time.
Minimum salary for a guy who knows how to win and loves playing for his hometown.
I am aware it is his hometown, even min salary i think the roster spot could be better used. I don’t see him contributing much at all. Hope I’m wrong.
The only name I’d have rather seen get signed is McClung.
NBA is OK, do you happen to know where Mac McClung is playing right now? I don’t see him on any summer league roster? He didn’t get invited? Or he was invited and got cut?
I’m not sure why he’s still not coming off someone’s bench. He’s definitely capable.
Maybe watch him play first?
Watched him play last year, didn’t you?
Evidently 1 of us does, and it can’t possibly be you. B/c Kyle Lowry is a winner. If you care about other things though, I could see having that sentiment
Yeah bro is confused. Lowry was a good role player. Should be the same this year.
I agree formerlyz. You have to have the guy on the floor because good things happen. He’s like Marcus Smart in many ways.
You look at the stat sheet and you’re not impressed but the guy is on EVERY loose ball, makes a lot of great plays and he won’t hurt you. I love him I think he’s a winner.
Seems the Sixers are lacking PF and they have limited funds and options now.
Limited options as far as what’s available for us to start the season with. But having full bird rights on KJ Martin (and draft picks), giving him a balloon contract to use as a trade chip at the deadline to fortify the 4 spot is the best and only option outside of the minimum guys available.
They need 2 options at the 4, and with their situation, that probably means KJ Martin and Robert Covington make the most sense. Though there are other options at the 4 out there. I also think a smallball 5 option, unless they think they can use Bona there, either as another piece or if they could get 1 option at the 4 that can also play smallball 5. Then lastly, I think a depth shooter at the 2/3 that doesn’t need the ball in their hands.
I can’t tell if they have 3 or 4 roster spots open, but if they could get all 4 of those things, which are currently available in FA, they’ll be in good position
If Roco is healthy. He makes the most sense starting at PF. Even if he only plays 15 to 20 mpg.
All we are missing is a PF.
As of right now we have Lowry Maxey PG and Embiid but who’s the fifth starter. Kelly Oubre doesn’t make much sense cause we don’t need another scorer out there, Eric Gordon would be good for spacing but lacks size and defence. Caleb Martin has the defence but personally I think lacks the size.
Dorian Finney-Smith would be good, Harrison Barnes would’ve been solid, don’t think we have the cap space or assets but DeAndre Hunter would be handy, just that 6’9 kinda 36% from 3 good defence 12 points per game with maybe 7 rebounds, it’s not like we need much it’s just we don’t really have anyone of that build
Lowry likely won’t be starting
Maxey
Oubre
George
Caleb Martin (at the 4)
Embiid
Oubre/George/Martin will all switch
That should be solid during the regular season (if we can stay healthy lol), but not the playoffs…
The gamble is paying KJ a balloon contract to trade at the deadline (with picks) to solidify the 4 spot. We’ll see how it plays out
I think CP3 would have looked amazing in Philadelphia or NY.
Kyle is a hometown kid. It’s a solid move. I don’t like Morey at all. Very few people in life I can say that about. He’s done alright by Sixers this year.
East is stacked …..
Great move. Hometown Man. An Assistant Coach in Uni. Thanks for staying home Kyle
