JULY 22: The signing is official, according to a press release from the Sixers.
JULY 21: The Sixers are bringing back Jeff Dowtin on a two-way contract, The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweets.
Dowtin finished last season with Philadelphia but the Sixers declined their 2024/25 option on the reserve point guard in order to open up as much cap space as possible.
Dowtin started off the 2023/24 season with Philadelphia’s NBAGL team, the Delaware Blue Coats, before inking a two-way deal with the Sixers. In April, that contract was converted to a standard agreement for the rest of the season, with a second-year team option.
Dowtin appeared in 12 regular season games for the Sixers, averaging 4.3 points and 2.3 assists in 11.8 minutes per contest. In 20 G League games, he averaged 19.0 PPG and 5.3 APG in 32.4 MPG.
Overall, Dowtin has played in 46 NBA games during his career.
After going undrafted out of Rhode Island in 2020, Dowtin spent the 2020/21 season with the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League affiliate. The 6’3″ point guard has since logged time with the Warriors, Bucks, and Raptors, often on either 10-day contracts or two-way deals that have seen him split his time with each team’s G League affiliate club.
Philadelphia already has wing Justin Edwards on a two-way deal and reportedly will also add forward David Jones on a similar contract. Dowtin would fill the third two-way slot.
I was hoping keve Aluma would get the last 2-way , & Dowtin would get a standard vet minimum. I am sure ( or I hope anyways ) that they have a solid plan for how this will shake out later. It would suck to lose Aluma to another team though. It seems like it would be jumping the gun a bit , or cart before the horse kinda thing to immediately get a standard contract ahead of Dowtin though.
Agreed. Alums has played great during summer league so hopefully they find a way to hold onto him. Dowtin has also played well in summer league but if he sees the floor in a regular season game it means it’s a blowout or things have gone horribly wrong.
Yes – I would go out on a limb & say if Aluma could be this productive in the NBA he would be an adequate, and prototypical PF that we’re currently lacking on the main roster. I am leaning that way with the way he’s played , he has experience & he hustles & plays smart like a vet, but preferably the smart play would be to have him prove it slowly 1st on a 2 way like council & Dowtin last year.
Who knows, they might convert Edwards or Dowtin still and sign Aluma. They could very easily sign Aluma to an E-10 and convert it later on in camp.
I forget , are E-10 exclusive to that one team? Or can anyone sign them? I agree that seems the most likely route , especially if they leave one vacancy on the roster. Maybe they’re just doing extra homework on Dowtin to make sure they’re confident he can fill a standard roster spot first?
No any team can sign any player to an E10. So for example, a team like Milwaukee could sign Aluma to an E10 and the sixers couldn’t do anything until he gets waived to go to the GLeague
