The Warriors expect their trade with the Nets to be finalized in time for Dennis Schröder to begin practicing with the team early next week and make his debut Thursday night in Memphis, sources tell Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
The deal will reportedly send Schröder and a second-round draft pick to Golden State in exchange for the expiring contract of De’Anthony Melton, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, along with two-way player Reece Beekman and three second-round selections. It can’t be completed until Sunday when Melton becomes trade-eligible.
The two teams have been in sporadic trade talks for weeks, Slater adds. He confirms reports that the discussions at one point included a larger deal involving Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, but those negotiations fell apart. He hears that Golden State preferred a simple trade for Schröder, giving them much-needed scoring help without sacrificing any of their young talent. Schröder was the only player who had been discussed in the last few days, Slater adds.
Schröder, 31, is a veteran guard who brings plenty of playoff and international experience. He will run the offense whenever Stephen Curry is resting, but the Warriors also envision having them on the court together, according to Slater. Coach Steve Kerr has been running 11- and 12-man rotations for much of the season, but Slater points out that Schröder’s arrival is likely to mean reduced roles for Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield and others.
There’s more on the Warriors:
- Kerr, Curry and Draymond Green were all advocates for acquiring Schröder because they’ve faced his German team so often in international competitions, states Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter video link). The trade won’t prevent the Warriors from “big-game hunting,” according to Charania, who adds that the team remains “active in the hunt for a star player.” He also points out that Golden State can aggregate Schröder’s contract in another deal before the February 6 deadline if necessary. The Warriors have been prominently mentioned in Jimmy Butler trade rumors, but other desirable targets could become available.
- The Warriors weren’t happy about being knocked out of the NBA Cup with a controversial loss Wednesday at Houston, but it did give them a break in the schedule, notes Sam Gordon of The San Francisco Chronicle. They’ll have three days off following Sunday’s game against Dallas, which gives them the rare chance to concentrate on practice and film sessions. “I think it’s really beneficial for us to get some more practice time. During the NBA season it’s really hard to get really good practices in,” Kevon Looney said. “We get to work on all the execution things. The small things that we keep talking about on film. We can actually go out on the practice court and work on the kinks.”
- Curry and Andrew Wiggins are both listed as questionable for Sunday’s contest, Slater tweets. Curry is experiencing inflammation in his neck area, and Wiggins is dealing with adductor tightness.
Didn’t know Beekman was in the deal, that means GSW getting Elfrid Payton?
They cant add Payton as they are hard capped at the first apron. If you a true warrior fan then you know.
I know my team, Beekman was on a 2way deal, I meant signing Payton to replace him on that 2way slot. You dont have to be a jerk and lie about what I wrote to my face, yknow. Be nice, its fun and cool!
Payton has too many NBA years of experience to be on a two way contract. I believe it’s three plus years is the cut off
Great trade for the Warriors, Schroder is a very assertive player that can provide some very much needed consistency and leadership for them. I dont think they should pursue a star, I like their depth and no available star is worth it imo
If GSW was a top 4 team with Melton who crumbled the second Melton was hurt, and if Schroder is a better player than Melton who plays the exact same positions, GSW will likely be a top 4 team again!
Warriors clearly needed another guy for end of game situations. Curry getting double and triple teamed is not gonna work and they obviously saw how that played out with all these losses lately.
It’s great when you’re up 20 the whole game and Buddy Hield is hot but when the game is close and you need Ballers who can come through for you in the last two minutes, Warriors were clearly lacking.
The Warriors will still be big game hunting because Curry and Dennis Schroder are not gonna cut it in a playoff game.
Moody and Kuminga are so slow to develop that I would package them for a stud. But that stud is NOT Jimmy Butler because he’s done. Can’t stay healthy and he’s not the player he was three years ago
Gary, what is up! I’m glad you’re back because the inmates took over this asylum a couple of days ago, and Warrior takes have reached all-time crazy, and I just cannot handle another “Wiggins plus these 5 guys for Jimmy” thread.
As usual, your take is brilliant. I agree with every single point except the Kuminga part. I assume you saw him give the Rockets 33 points last week?
I’m loving Kumingas game as a starter with big minutes. He’s really showing that he worked hard in the off-season to get a scoring threat into his repertoire.
I would love to see him become a stud, but we need a stud right now. That’s the only reason I would include him in a deal.
Well that plus I think he wants max money right now as well. That’s not gonna happen so I believe he’ll be gone at the deadline.
As you mentioned often Ari, he had an offer of 30 million a year and turned it down because he wants Max.
So let’s trade him away with Moody plus the bigger money guys like Payton Looney and Wiggins and bring in a star.
I don’t know who that star is but we need him lol
Thank you for the kind words Ari you’re always very nice with your comments to me and I appreciate it greatly.
Gary – I appreciate your takes because, one, you understand the game better than any other poster on HoopsRumors, IMO, and, two, you are always open to revising your takes. I try to follow that example, but too often fail.
We see eye-to-eye on almost all the big issues, but we have one difference in perspective that recurs:
You are win-now, where I have a longer-term outlook. You’re willing to exchange future benefits for present ones, where I’m not. For me, this season is to “reset” financially, and make some investments for coming years. I’m not trading away promising young players to improve from a 6th to 3rd place team.
We agree: Butler doesn’t help GSW short- or long-term.
We disagree on Kuminga. Fact: he will be extended at the end of this season for his market value, and has no say in the matter. Fact: It cannot be a bad thing for the Warriors to own 5 year contract for a 22 year old at his market value.
He has averaged 21 points per game in his Warriors starts, scores at 23 pts per 34 mins, and is a plus defender. That has continued since he became a starter again 6 games ago.
Next season, the cap goes up ~$11M, and the Dubs expect to go an additional.$20M over that. Even when paying Kuminga $35M, there’s space to add another $30M player (assuming GP2 and Looney are replaced with $2.8M salaries, and we retain Hield and SloMo).
Ari you are too kind. I think you obviously only read a couple of my posts because I’ve been wrong quite a bit on here and I’m certainly glad you skim over those stinkers.
I enjoy your comments as well. I think they’re well written and thought out.
The reason I am such a win now guy is because of one man. Steph Curry. Without him, we are toast and a guy like that comes along once in a lifetime.
Can the Warriors draft well here on out and get a couple of excellent All-Star players? We’ll see. But how long will Curry play at an All-Star level? This year is looking good but who knows about next? So we’re probably on the same page in desiring that stud they go after is a younger guy, not Jimmy Butler or Kevin Durant in their mid 30s.
But yeah, I don’t know how they’re gonna do it with the salary cap and all that stuff. I’m just hoping there’s a team that is not doing well and has a guy they’re committed to, but would rather start over and trade him? Sort of like when all the smoke with Giannis and the Bucks weren’t doing well. If there’s a team and not Giannis, he’s not going anywhere, but if there’s a team with that kind of a scenario…, they start slipping in the standings, but their star is on big money and they wanna start over. maybe they deal him away? We shall see. Thanks again for the nice encouraging words.
Curry aint playing more seasons. His time is limited which is why you need to be on win now mode. If you are treading water to just show you are competing then thats fine. But if the aim is to win another championship, then FO needs to bring another star and Schroeder is not that guy nor is Butler.
By the way, I changed from android to iPhone and it’s been a serious nightmare the last two weeks.
When you forget your yahoo password from six years ago and all your apps are tied into it you’re screwed.
Yahoo will not reset your password without subscribing to some $15 helpdesk thingy. So it’s been a process.
So now instead of Gary, Warriors, Red Sox Gary, Red Sox Warriors with two exes and five asses plus a couple hours thrown in because I have seven different emails tied to my Hoops rumors account yet. Can’t notify them about my subscription because there’s no link? Technology sucks in a major way.
Gary, I’d you restore your premium membership, their support will more likely listen to you.
Thank you I appreciate it. Still having trouble with spellcheck and AutoCorrect as you can read above lol. Thanks for the suggestion.
HoopsRumors’ revenue model is advertising-only, which is why it doesnt have a support capability and won’t invest in upgrading from this 2006 bulletin-board software.
But, if you’re struggling to get your paid subscription restored (there aren’t many of us), I bet Luke Adams would try to help in some way (even though it’s not his job). He’s like that.
Yes, I agree he’s like that. Definitely one of the best there is. But I think I’ll just go ahead and pay again. It’s only 30 bucks again for a year. Even though I just renewed lol I think there’s things I spend $60 on that are worth far less than these websites that I look at many times a day.
If Kuminga has been a star before reaching his 4th year then we wouldnt be having this discussion about Curry needing a second star.
They would need to maximize his returns soon if they think that he is not a star at this point.
Gary, its Podz getting 24.9 MPG and 7.9 MPG. It’s 100% on him. He should be averaging at least 15 PPG with that playing time, Moody can do that but gets 10 less MPG than Podz and has 7.4 MPG. They both avg the same PPG but Podz gets 10 more MPG. Just horrible coaching by Kerr.
Podz has been the weak link all year, praying he is traded soon.
With how he is playing, you can expect a fully protected 2nd rounder coming your way.
Yeah I agree…. This just screams treading water to me…
It’s an upgrade to what they were, but lack enough elsewhere to need another move…
If you know ball and follow your team, then you would know that the Warriors are close to the 2nd apron and will not be looking to go over that. Babey J is a fake fan of the game and of the Warriors.
Warriors are 200k closer to the 2nd apron due to the Melton trade.
Yes, good points. I think I have wishful thinking because the young guys don’t make a lot of money.
Not gonna get much of a star with those salaries going out. Maybe include Wiggins? Or Looney/Payton? Probably have to be a three team or four team deal?
The team just dont have the salaries going out to match those going in unless Green (unlikely) or Wiggins (maybe) are included in any deal for a star.
Warriors are possibly at a crossroads and the performance they have for 2024-2025 will dictate what they do next.
This season is a do your best season for the vets and if they make a playoff run then they can build on that by having the trade pieces for the off season (Moody and Kuminga SnT).
Hard to accept but we may already be seeing the last legs of Curry being in the talk for playoffs so lets enjoy it while we can before a rebuild has fully commenced.
Think the real need for the GSW as it has been for years is a true big man that’ll protect the rim and work hard on the boards.
That’s why I’d like to see them follow this up by going after Big Val in Washington.
Apparently the Lakers are in talks and it’s been about giving up Vincent and 2 seconds (a similar package to what they just gave up for Schroder).
I’d be looking to give up GP2 and Moody plus whatever second rounds picks they have left.
Curry Heild Wiggins Green Val
Schroder Podzi Kuminga Anderson Looney
That’s a pretty darn solid 10 man rotation
Splash bros in the backcourt, the defence of Green and Wiggins then Val holding in down in the paint. Schroder, Kuminga and Looney offer tons of impact, then you’ve got Podzi Anderson and TJD for fill in spot up minutes
Simmons>Russ – I think you over-value Valunciunas, especially defensively. Might be the worst PnR defender in the league at this point, and he’s not a rim protector. The Warriors could have signed him as free agent this past summer for $10M but passed. Kerr would never play him over Looney.
Idk look at the successful GSW teams and who their centres were…
Bogut and Zaza
Both just big bodies that work hard and clog the paint. Not elite defenders, but do the dirty work. Looney is too small and TJD just ain’t reliable for a win now team
Zaza was just a big body and do remember he played with KD. KD was doing the things Zaza couldnt do as a center.
Simmons>Russ, Bogut was a defensive stud, and superb screen-setter and passer — a perfect fit all the way around. He’d cost $25M/yr today.
Valunciunis is a completely different player, and the comparison to Zaza is apt. Zaza was way less than Bogut. Even though Zaza started in the regular season, he played only 14-18 mpg and was paid the veteran minimum of $3M. He was used as and paid as a reserve. Defensively, ZaZa could not defend the PnR, so we benched him in the playoffs.
At $10M/yr Valunciunis is a higher priced version of Pachulia — decent offensively, a liability defensively. I’d love to have him on our bench, but $10M is too pricey.
We agree that GSW needs a true big that can be used selectively against the growing number of larger C’s in the league. The question is how do we find and afford the right guy?
I agree and GSW have cooked in the past with rolling bigs. Vucevic or Jonas V is the guy they need for when teams like the Rockets go big and isolate Kerr’s predictable small ball lineups that rarely work.
That small ball lineup that rarely worked resulted in 4 championships. Yeap, it rarely worked.
Yeah sure, Hamptons 5 was “small ball” everyone. @Tallball, you appear to be trolling me and only me so I am going to mute you, you never have any real points and are only here to troll me. Go away. your takes are bad, you hate the Warriors, you dont know ball, I dont care what you have to say so never reply to me again, thanks.
If you cant take the heat, stay out of the kitchen boi
Davey J,
I too would love a big to use in those situations, and I agree that we’ve lost too many games over the last 4 years by not having one. But my C profile is:
1. can protect the rim
2. can defend the PnR
3. fits into our salary structure at > $12M
These all disqualify Vucevic and 1. + 2. disqualify Valunciunas.
I also believe you over-estimate how effective Vucevic and Valunciunas are defensively against big C’s. Kevin Looney does better at that than these 2 big Euros.
People keep suggesting the Warriors need a big man, but if you look at it closely, a talented young guy like Sengun in Houston or Jokić in Denver and all the good big guys, they don’t go off for 40 against the Warriors.
They just reach their general stat line as they do against every other team. Yes, the kid on the Clippers, Zubac has a good game here and there, but even though it looks ugly while watching.., the game has not been determined because Zubac had a great game.
Besides, it’s only two points underneath instead of three from Harden or the other guys.
I think the Warriors are correct when they don’t pick up the marginal guy like Paul Reed, who is available or Byombu or guys like that. I have faith they know what they’re doing.
Yea it’s an ugly 2 on the inside but those usually come at 75 percent from the field, rather than a 35 from the 3.
Not to mention GSW always try play small Green at the 5 Kuminga the 4, that won’t work against say Denver with MPJ at SF being bigger than anyone on your team. Memphis have Edey at like 7’4 and JJJ. Lakers have AD. OKC got Chet and Hartenstein. There’s really no good match up for the Warriors without atleast 1 big body that can give them 20 or so minutes
Yes agreed but who? Some of the names floated out there are just not very good basketball players. They sit on the end of the bench for the other teams, but they’re supposed to do well on the Warriors according to some of these folks? Bismak Biyombu, guys like that. Not gonna happen.
Now trade Payton, two way Spencer and that 2nd for a starting C(veteran) and cash.
Promote Post
Sign a PG and a C on a two way contracts from the age of 21 to 22. (PG needs to be able to shoot)
Maybe sign Plowden or someone else for the last spot
Valencunas
Payton and that 2nd for either S Adams, Kelly Olynyk or Janos Val
Kuminga sucks…has to go…this first move getting Schroeder was ok….but a great trade for the Nets and their tankathon. They warned Dennis not to shoot so well but he didn’t listen, and payed the price…will be interesting to see if Wiggins and Kuminga go… I’ve certainly got my fingers crossed
Simmons>Russ, if it were that simple, you wouldn’t see this board filled with Dubs fans arguing with each other every day!
You may be surprised to know that the data says the exact opposite. In fact, when the Warriors did the opposite of what you advise (which was to go smaller) at the beginning of the 2nd half of last season, they finished 27-12.
Fact: When executed properly, Warriors small ball has consistenty proven to win over larger lineups.
Are you aware that thIs lineup had the 2nd best point differential in the Western Conference last year (of any with more than 350 possessions?
– Curry, Podz, Draymond, Kuminga and Wiggins (the smallest starting lineup in the West)
And the third best lineup in the West during that same period was:
– Curry, Podz, Draymond, TJD, and Kuminga (even with TJD, it was the 2nd smallest starting lineup in the West)
Don’t get me wrong, the Warriors suffer inside from size mismatches. (We’d be better with a Chet or Hartenstein..) But, defensively, defending the 3 point line is now a bigger consideration. And, offensively, we get better shots.
Check out the last 5 minutes of the recent Minnesota game as an example. The biggest front-line in the League (Gobert and Randle) was outplayed by Draymond and Kuminga.
Now let’s see if Dwnver cares enough to make some moves…
