The Bulls will retire Derrick Rose‘s No. 1 jersey during the 2025/26 season, the team announced in a press release. The news came ahead of Saturday’s “Derrick Rose Night” in Chicago.
“Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball,” said chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. “Retiring a jersey recognizes a player’s impact beyond on-court achievements. It honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the organization and forged deep, lasting connections with fans. It recognizes that emotional bond and the great influence a player has had on the team and organization’s identity.”
Rose, who retired as a player in late September, spent eight seasons with Chicago, his hometown team. As Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune noted in October, no Bulls player has worn No. 1 since Rose departed the team in 2016. Starting next season, his jersey will hang in the rafters of the United Center.
Rose told ESPN’s Shams Charania in an interview on Thursday that he “would love” to have his jersey retired by the organization.
Chicago selected Rose with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. He earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2009 and was named an All-Star in each of his next three seasons, winning the MVP award in 2011. Over the course of that season, his third in the NBA at age 22, he averaged 25.0 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game across 81 starts, leading the Bulls to a league-best 62-20 record.
The fact that Rose won the MVP award while still on his rookie scale contract resulted in an NBA rule being unofficially named after him. As we’ve outlined in a Hoops Rumors Glossary entry, the “Derrick Rose rule” allows players coming off their rookie deals to sign maximum-salary contracts worth up to 30% of the salary cap instead of the typical 25% if they’ve earned a major award such as MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, or All-NBA.
However, Rose’s career hit a snag following his first four seasons in Chicago, as he missed the entire 2012/13 season due to an ACL tear and only played in 10 games in ’13/14 as he continued to recover from that injury.
Overall, Rose averaged 19.7 PPG, 6.2 APG and 3.7 APG in 406 regular season games with the Bulls. His shooting slash line was .448/.302/.813.
Rose, 36, will be the fifth former Bull to have his jersey retired, joining Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23) and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). Chicago also has banners honoring former head coach Phil Jackson and former GM Jerry Krause.
lol why? All he did was be the 2nd best bull since Mike then get injured forever
Absolutely a Bulls legend. They should retire his jersey. It’s a team thing. Not the HOF
Anyone who needs an explanation for this. Go away, go to nfl mlb, nhl, little league
Thank you Al some ppl just don’t understand
The fact that u have to even ask why, means u don’t know bulls basketball, and what Rose meant to the entire city of Chicago. D Rose was a freak of nature at the point guard position. Rookie of the year. Youngest mvp in nba history. Most athletic point guard since Westbrook (Triple Double Russ)..Need I go on??? Educate yourself
7 seasons, 406 games, 3 playoff series wins, 7 playoff series losses, no title = jersey retire? What a joke.
Curry is 23-5 in playoffs series btw.
It’s a joke. I have no doubt he could’ve been great but could’ve been great doesn’t translate into jerseys retirement.
Everything has to be about the dubs and how great Steph is. Davey being davey.
Exactly, Rose was a 2.5 year wonder, 2009-2012. Never the same after the injury. 2.5 years of elite play should never mean a jersey retirement unless he actually died.
Basketball is the easiest sport to get a jersey retirement, and he won MVP. His career is a HOF career that started and peaked in Chicago, so there shouldn’t be a problem with his # being retired. He’s the last good thing to happen to the bulls in a quarter century too.
“He’s the last good thing to happen to the bulls in a quarter century too.”
That means nothing. The Bulls have only ever had 1 good era, MJ’s.
Did you read the 1st 2 sentences I typed before that one? NBA HOF is cupcake, MLB is 1%, and NFL is in between.
Teams retire jerseys..It happens more often than you think. Sometimes it’s not always about the on court success. Players that meant so much to the team, fans and the their city, are the ones that fit that category. Yes injuries derailed his career, but rose wasnt given anything. He worked hard to continue playing pro basketball. A lot of ppl thought he would never be able to play again. He proved em wrong, came back and worked harder to help his team win, didn’t matter which team that was. But anyways..
Should have let him retire as a Bull, unsure about the jersey being retired but he was great when he wasn’t injured
Dude won (unjustly) an MVP award with the team, so… nugh said, retire his jersey and in 5 in to the HoF!
Outsiders won’t understand this, but Chicagoans know what he means to the city and the franchise. On paper it’s easy to question, but context matters. He was a well known and respected hooper within the city before he even graduated high school.
2.5 seasons of elite play. He can be beloved without preventing anyone else from wearing that jersey number again.
Then why ever bother retiring a jersey?
It shouldn’t be a one to one of accolades = Jersey retirement. It’s also abt what the players mean to fans. If you don’t think Roses jersey should be retired then you clearly don’t understand what he means to bulls fans.
I agree, jersey retirements are pretty silly to begin with, and the Yankees have ruined it by retiring too many so now all their players have to wear football jersey numbers. I think it should be reserved for elite all-timers or guys who die while active, DRose is neither of those.
I’m not a Bulls fan and not from Chicago (not even from the US), but I wholeheartedly agree. You can’t apply the same standards to jersey retirements as to the Hall of Fame. It’s not just about rings, playoff wins or points or All-NBA teams, it’s about what you meant to a franchise.
The following players have their jerseys retired (only to name a few out of many I could name):
– Brad Davis (Dallas Mavericks)
– Udonis Haslem (Miami Heat)
– Avery Johnson (San Antonio Spurs)
– Nick Collison (OKC)
None of them has ever sniffed an All-Star game, not the mention MVP. They meant a lot to their franchises for different reasons and Rose meant a lot to the Bulls. He brought hope to the city after the post MJ/Pippen/Jackson era. He’s the only Bull other than MJ to win the MVP. Plus he’s from Chicago.
Well deserved jersey retirement for D-Rose.
Haters gotta hate.
Anyone who doesn’t know Rose. Doesn’t know BALL. This is a team thing. Healthy one of best ever.
Exactly!!
Up next Noah and Hinrich!!!!
Meanwhile AK holding Vu hostage here lol
@ Raz…Toni Kukoc.
Maybe we should do the new trend in tearing down statues and rewriting history. Take down almost every trophy and deeply go through the hall of fame and take people out. I could think of 30 people right now who should NOT be in the HOF
If Rose is in then why not some random player from the 70s with the same stats. Why isn’t Randy Smith in the HOF if Rose is? Or anyone like Smith. Way to much glazing in todays NBA
Jersey retire for. .. Luol Deng is next then Reggie Theus, then Kirk H then …..
Anyone hating on this is still salty about DRose winning MVP over Lebron
You mean LeStink?
I’m a Sixers fan and not even in the US and I just love how everyone has to come on here and hate on DRose and the bulls. 1 if it doesn’t affect you move on but 2 if it’s not your team either why do you care hahaha
DRose was huge for the city of Chicago. Yes his greatness wasn’t very long due to injuries but he’s still the youngest ever MVP. His 62-20 season is the 4th best season for the bulls franchise.
To think that injury happened in his 4th season and he came back and then played another 11 seasons afterwards and still averages 17-5-3 is pretty amazing.
There’s much worse guys to have jerseys retired, Jim Loscutoff (best season averaged 10 points per game), Nate Thrummond with the Cavs (played 2 seasons and averaged 5-6), Byron Beck, Al Attles, George McGinnis for the Pacers (3 seasons of 9.5 off the bench) and Larry Steele
This is like the 6ers retiring Joel’s jersey lol
Not even close
Really? Look at their careers… Joel has inarguably had a better career than DRose and it would be laughable to retire Embiids number
It’s simple. DRose is likeable. Embiid is not.
Embiid will get his number retired for sure. He’s better than Rose ever was and has played for Philly longer than Rose did Chicago. If Iverson got his retired than Embiid will for sure, he’s better and will be there longer. Embiid is like Shaq would’ve been if he never left Orlando, stats are there and winning isn’t.
Desperate for some ticket sales I guess…
CHI can do what it wants. Rose, as a former MVP, has a strong HOF case as well. Right now, there hasn’t been a league MVP that didn’t get into the HOF. He could be the first, sure. But that’s not the way to bet. The Basketball HOF is easiest of the HOF’s to get into.
