Kevin Jones

Cavaliers Notes: Irving, Varejao, Jones

Here's the latest out of Cleveland on a Cavs team that Kyrie Irving thinks is ready to contend for the playoffs:

  • Appearing on ESPN 850 WKNR in Cleveland (link via Sports Radio Interviews), Irving talked about his expectations for the team: "I have high hopes for us. Obviously our number one goal is to make the playoffs this year and we’re definitely going to attain that as long as we continue to get better and as long as we compete every single night."
  • Irving added that he's excited about the players the front office drafted and acquired in the offseason, and that he's looking forward to starting to play with them.
  • Several sources tell Bob Finnan of the News-Herald that they believe Anderson Varejao will be traded by the Cavs at this season's trade deadline.
  • Varejao, for his part, said yesterday that he wants to remain a Cav, though he recognizes he doesn't have much control over the situation: "I'm still here. I can't control that. If they trade me, they trade me…. I'm happy in Cleveland. I love the city and I love the fans."
  • The Cavs aren't worried about replacing Antawn Jamison's 17.2 points per game, according to head coach Byron Scott.
  • Kevin Jones signed a three-year pact with the Cavs, but only $50K of his 2012/13 salary is guaranteed, as Finnan writes. Our list of non-guaranteed contracts shows that a number of Cavs players have partial guarantees on their deals.

Cavs Expected To Finalize Deal With Kevin Jones

The Cavaliers and Kevin Jones are expected to finalize a three-year deal today, according to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv (Twitter link). Zagoria says the contract would be for two years with a team option for year three, which seems to suggest that the first two years would be fully guaranteed.

Zagoria reported back in late June that Jones and the Cavs had reached an agreement on a contract, but it appears the deal remained on hold through most of the summer. Jones suffered a bone bruise in his foot that cut his pre-draft workouts short and kept him out of summer league play, so it's possible the Cavs were ensuring that he was fully healthy before officially signing anything.

Jones, ranked as the 45th best prospect in this year's draft class by ESPN.com's Chad Ford, played four years at West Virginia, averaging an impressive 19.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per game in his senior year. His deal with the Cavs should be modest, but may exceed the minimum salary, since Cleveland has over $11MM in cap space at its disposal.

Cavs Notes: Kevin Jones, Alonzo Gee, C.J. Miles

With the start of the 2012/13 season mere months away, the Cavs have been relatively quiet this offseason in terms of free agent signings and trades. From signing Luke Harangody to a qualifying offer to acquiring Jeremy Pargo in a trade with Memphis, Cleveland has yet to make a true splash this summer. Let's check in with Bob Finnan of The News-Herald to catch up on the latest news and headlines surrounding the Cavs…

  • The Cavs remain interested in fully committing to power forward Kevin Jones even though the team already has five players on the roster who play his position. The undrafted rookie from West Virginia suffered a bone bruise in his ankle but is expected to be ready for training camp if Cleveland ends up signing him. Jones, 22, averaged 19.9 PPG and 10.9 RPG during his senior year with the Mountaineers.
  • Cleveland has yet to decide on what to do with small forward Alonzo Gee, a restricted free agent. Gee is hoping that the Cavs offer him a long-term deal instead of just a qualifying offer. If Gee isn't offered the type of deal that he desires, he can simply sign the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
  • If the Cavs aren't able to come to terms on a deal with Gee, they will turn their attention to signing unrestricted free agent C.J. Miles. The former Jazz guard averaged 9.1 PPG and 2.1 RPG during the 2011/12 season. Finnan suggests that there is a small chance the Cavs sign both Gee and Miles.

Odds & Ends: Noah, Cavs, Pistons, Raptors

The U.S. squad for the 2012 Olympics has been hit hard by injuries, but Team USA isn't the only country that will see NBA players miss the London games. Already facing concerns over Tony Parker's health, France will be without Joakim Noah this summer, the Bulls big man told L'Equipe (French link). K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune confirms the news, noting that Noah will miss the Olympics to rest and rehab the ankle he sprained in the playoffs.

Here are a few more odds and ends from around the NBA on Independence Day….
